Welcome to Eggshell Boats

We are an imprint of the Arachis Press, a small press publishing quality books for all ages. To browse our catalog, please go to the Books page or visit the Store at our distributor’s site. Also, visit Arachis Press for more offerings. Eggshell Boats focuses on poetry and literary fiction.

Our Catalog

Eggshell Boats publishes primarily poetry. We have recently added a collection of literary fantasy stories. Please feel free to browse our catalog, here or at the Arachis Press store.

Our Purpose

Poetry. Yes, that is why we started Eggshell Boats and, before it, our parent publisher, Arachis Press. AP has moved away from that particular market—though not completely—and EB is taking up the slack. We have moved into fiction also, with our first collection of short stories. It is true that we began publishing at both Arachis Press and Eggshell Boats to share the work of our editor/publisher, Stephen Brooke, but we are gradually adding authors. We thank you for stopping by our pages here and invite you to explore the rest of the Insolent Lad site and, especially, Arachis Press.

Formats

At this time, our books are offered in print and ebook, available directly at our store or at vendors across the internet. Most of the print editions are paperbacks. Several of our ebooks are free to download, in EPUB and PDF formats.

The Boat

Why eggshells? The name Eggshell Boats was originally intended for a literary magazine and, in turn, derived from a line in a poem by Stephen Brooke. When and if the magazine might appear is uncertain, but the Eggshell Boats imprint is here to stay.

EGGSHELL BOATS

On Chapbooks

By ‘chapbook’ I mean, well, nothing precisely. A chapbook is a little book (in terms of length), maybe forty pages tops, though that cutoff is completely arbitrary. The thing is, a chapbook is no longer the cost-effective publication it once was. With a print-on-demand format, it costs little more to print a longer book. At one time, chapbooks of poetry tended to be handmade, run off on copiers or mimeographs (my younger readers would have no idea what those are) or hand- operated printing presses in a backroom somewhere. Now they are something of a boutique item and probably priced higher than need be. There is certainly a small market for the chapbook as a thing of beauty, a collectors’ item. We would rather not get into that sort of thing at Eggshell Boats, at least for now. Our focus is on bringing good literature at a good price to the reader. If one has enough worthwhile work to fill a longer book, it is better to go that way. This is not to say that we will not turn out a short chapbook- length volume. Such a book would not warrant the expense of an ISBN and distribution to bookstores— even the online sellers of ebooks, although we could allow our distributor to assign an ISBN to those.
